Titling

I’m not keen on coming up with my own titles – I like to apply existing sayings or phrases to my work.

For my emotional panels I have come up with my own titles. For my journeys the titles are coded about the actual journey (Tubular Smells, The Arched Cross etc.) But I have had real trouble coming up with titles for my plaids. There isn’t much I can add to them as they are formulaic and regular… I remembered that Damien Hirst had names his pharmacy cabinets after song titles so I thought I would consider existing titles of books or songs as possible titles for work. This adds another level for the audience to find a way into the work. I will only choose titles that apply to the work and I don’t mind if people make an assumption that the piece is about that item or not.

I originally trawled the internet looking for titles that included colours (for books and songs) and then I decided just to look at all the songs in my iTunes library and find appropriate titles from there too.
